Acupuncture Answers from Our Lindenhurst Chiropractor
Even after thousands of years as an established treatment modality, acupuncture continues to have a somewhat mysterious air about it, especially in the West. Here at Natural Care Chiropractic, we have used acupuncture with great success, but we understand that some patients might find it confusing or intimidating. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about acupuncture from our Lindenhurst chiropractor, Dr. Freund.
Is acupuncture a genuine healing technique? Not only is acupuncture a genuine healing technique, but it's one of the oldest healing techniques in practice, dating back at least 4,000 years. Ancient Chinese healers first began using acupuncture to relieve pain and treat a wide variety of ailments -- and we're still using it for those same purposes today!
What's the principle behind it? The ancients believed that a life force known as qi was distributed throughout the body along pathways known as meridians. Disruption of qi along any of these meridians could cause pain and sickness, so needles were inserted at specific points to restore proper energy flow. Modern science translates this principle into terms of nerve pathways and nerve dysfunction instead, with the strategic insertion of needles helping to improve nerve function and (as a result) overall health.
How does acupuncture relieve pain? By improving nerve function, acupuncture can help increase circulation to parts of the body that require extra blood flow, expediting the healing process while reducing painful inflammation. It also directly relieves pain by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkilling neurotransmitters.
Does acupuncture cause pain? If you've avoided acupuncture in the past because you were concerned the procedure would be painful, there is no need to worry. The hair-thin needles used in acupuncture don't cause pain -- in fact, acupuncture sessions tend to be so relaxing that some patients have been known to doze off. Our goal is to leave you with less pain.
How long does it take? A typical acupuncture session at Natural Care Chiropractic takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes once the needles have been inserted. All you have to do during this period is relax and let the benefits of acupuncture take full effect.
What do you prescribe acupuncture for? We prescribe acupuncture to treat pain, digestive problems, sleep issues, chronic tension and other common ailments. We also perform acupuncture on athletes and other individuals who need to keep their muscles supple and relaxed. Acupuncture can be effective either on its own or in conjunction with traditional chiropractic treatment.
