Massage Therapy: Not Just a Luxury

Posted on 2012-04-11 15:16:30

massage therapy as chiropractic complement.jpgWhen you think of a massage, you may think of vacation or a spa day with your friends. While it is true that getting a massage can feel like an indulgence, you may not realize that massage therapy actually has numerous health benefits too. In fact, there are many types of massage -- each of which can complement the chiropractic services we offer here at Natural Care Chiropractic.

The Myofascial massage technique, for example, is useful for releasing muscle tension and knots that can cause discomfort and limitations on motion range. This technique uses gentle, sustained pressure to release muscle fibers without the use of oils, lotions or massage-like motions. When used properly, the Myofascial massage technique can also prevent future injuries and help improve the body's response to spinal adjustments.

Our chiropractor also recommends massage for certain individuals who are prone to muscle injuries and strains. For example, pregnant women may benefit from pregnancy massage, as the extra weight during the latter gestational trimester can cause discomfort and difficulty performing certain tasks. Likewise, athletes may benefit from sports massage as a way to prevent or treat overuse injuries.

Pain Management Tops the List of Massage Benefits

In addition to its health benefits, massage is also an effective and natural form of pain management. In fact, many of our patients who participate in regular massage find that they have less back pain, neck pain and headaches due to the release of toxins in the muscles. When the toxins are released, the muscles feel less tense and more mobile. However, it is important to drink plenty of water following a massage to help flush these toxins out of the body.
Patients who find pain relief through massage may also benefit from other natural therapies, such as acupuncture. Although it may look painful, this type of therapy is not uncomfortable, but rather, helps treat neck pain and back pain by activating the nervous system through pressure points throughout the body.

Chiropractic Care to Help Keep Headaches Away

Posted on 2012-03-21 11:05:28

chiropractic care in Lindenhurst for headaches.jpgConstant pain, pounding or a dull ache on one side of your head are all symptoms of headaches. There are many different types of headaches from tension and migraines to pain caused by injuries. A tension headache is generally the most common headache experienced by adults. Tension headache and migraines can be triggered by several different factors, but some of the most common headache triggers are stress and anxiety, foods we eat and changes in your daily routine. Chiropractic care can help alleviate pain and also, track the source of the problem to prevent it from reoccurring.

What’s Causing Your Headaches?

Stress is a headache trigger. When you are under stress at work to perform or meet deadlines you may experience unwanted headache pain from tense muscles and rising blood pressure. Emotional factors such as depression, anxiety and frustration generate stress in one form or another. A headache can last from 30 minutes to a couple of days.

Tension headaches and migraines are sometimes prompted by food. Eating foods with nitrate compounds such as processed meats may spark headache pain. Nitrates dilate blood vessels which in turn causes pounding or aching in your head. MSG (monosodium glutamate), most often found in packaged foods, is known to set off a headache. Foods high in amino acids such as ripened cheeses, chocolate, pickled and fermented foods may also spark tension or migraine headache.

A third headache trigger is change in your daily routine. When your body is used to a specific routine and it is interrupted suddenly this can incur headaches. Going on a vacation, changing sleep patterns or a new work schedule may also be triggering factors.

The good news is that chiropractic care has been proven to significantly reduce headache pain and help with pain management. Spinal adjustments assist in re-aligning your neck and the spine, which helps reduce and eliminate pain in your head. Massage therapy is another treatment to relax tense muscles in your neck and back which aides in alleviating headache pain. Acupuncture or Trigger Point Therapy can target specific areas and muscles that are causing head pain. Our Lindenhurst chiropractor will create a chiropractic care plan by combining different these different techniques.

At our office, Lindenhurst chiropractor Dr. Mark Freund is committed to keeping in contact with patients in the most convenient ways possible - including the usage of social media and Facebook. Dr. Freund believes that health care providers should be friendly and approachable, and Facebook offers a neutral medium for clients and the general community to ask questions and learn more about natural ways of preventing and treating musculoskeletal aches and pains.

Because our office is focused on total body well care, by becoming a part of our Facebook page, you can gain helpful tips for living a healthful life. We often post helpful facts, articles, videos and blog posts about the most efficient ways of burning calories, eating a nutritious diet and supplementing with vitamins and minerals that help boost the immune system and build strong, healthy bones.

Learning About Chiropractic Care Through Facebook

Our Facebook page makes it easy to understand how chiropractic care can benefit you. For example, our chiropractor can provide in-office and at-home pain management techniques that can help improve back pain, neck pain and other uncomfortable systems that may be the result of a personal injury, musculoskeletal disease or a spinal subluxation. Our in-office techniques include manual adjustments of the spine and neck, as well as other natural therapies designed to supplement the care of a chiropractor.

For example, many of our patients find that acupuncture is an effective and relatively painless form of pain management that requires no surgery or medication. Similarly, we commonly recommend massage therapy as a way to relax the muscles, reduce tension and release built-up toxins that can cause neck and back pain. In fact, many of our patients who begin to use massage therapy begin to notice a reduction in other symptoms related to the muscles and nerves in the spine, such as chronic headaches or migraines.

By having another way to interact with patients, old and new, we are able to further educate people about chiropractic and wellness care and the benefits they can receive through different techniques and therapies.

Treatment for Sciatica with Lindenhurst Chiropractic Care

Posted on 2011-12-13 11:03:06

Lindenhurst chiropractor helps with sciatica.jpgAt Natural Care Chiropractic, a Lindenhurst chiropractic clinic serving the Wadsworth, Antioch, and Gurnee areas of Illinois, our chiropractor treats patients suffering from sciatica, a condition associated with pain in the lower back and leg area. The pain is a result of pinching in the sciatic nerve, which runs down the spine and the legs. Treatment options for sciatica include physical therapy and chiropractic adjustments, as well as massage therapy.

Sciatica Explained

Sciatica is not a specific condition. The term is used to describe the pain a patient feels in the sciatic nerve. Sciatica may occur as a result of another condition, such as a bulging or herniated disc in the spine. Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spine, can also cause sciatica, as can a traumatic injury and piriformis syndrome, which occurs when the piriformis muscle becomes too tight or spasms. Sitting for long periods of time or suffering an injury can cause piriformis syndrome.

Typically, patients with sciatica feel pain in their low back, buttocks and backs of their legs. Some patients experience numbness or tingling as well as weakness in the muscles. In very rare, emergency cases, patients may lose the ability to control their bladder or bowels.

Massage and Physical Therapy for Sciatica

Common treatment options for sciatica include physical therapy and massage therapy. Deep tissue massage, offered at our clinic, helps the piriformis muscle relax. Physical therapies used to treat sciatica include stretches and exercises that help the muscles in the back become stronger. Exercises can also help improve your posture. Chiropractor Dr. Mark Freund will teach patients the exercises necessary to help them heal. Patients can do the exercises in the comfort of their own homes. Other treatment options for sciatica include spinal adjustment, which helps restore a patient's range of motion and eases pain in the sciatic nerve.
