Neck Pain Commonly Asked Questions
One of the more common problems that bring patients into our office is that of ongoing neck pain, which can become debilitating if not treated. Whether you have chronic neck pain or neck pain that seems to come and go, we've put together a list of some commonly asked questions and answers that may be useful to you.
What part of the spine makes up the neck?
When we talk about neck pain, we're referring to the cervical (upper) spine. This includes the upper seven vertebrae, which lie in front of the spinal cord. Pain in the vertebrae below this point fall into the category of the thoracic (middle) or lumbar (lower) spine.
What are some common causes of neck pain?
There are many potential causes of neck pain, ranging from medical to environmental factors. One of the more common causes we see here in our office is that of poor posture. This is especially common among people who work desk jobs and spend a great deal of time in front of screens on a daily basis. Over time, this can wreak a great deal of havoc on the cervical spine.
In addition to poor posture, injuries can also contribute to neck pain. For example, one of the most common injuries resulting from a car accident is that of whiplash, which almost exclusively affects the cervical spine. This injury can lead to pain and stiffness, as well as additional symptoms like headaches and numbness.
How can chiropractic treatment help?
There are numerous chiropractic treatment methods that can be effective in managing and relieving neck pain. For instance, spinal adjustments utilize the skilled and gentle manipulation of the spine to improve alignment and relieve pain. We offer this non-invasive, drug-free procedure in our office. Another chiropractic treatment to consider is that of spinal decompression, which is extremely effective in situations where a herniated or bulging disc is causing the pain. Specifically, spinal decompression lengthens the spine and increases space between the vertebrae, allowing slipped discs to return to their proper positions while also relieving excessive pressure on nerves. Often times, spinal decompression and spinal adjustment are services that we recommend in conjunction with each other for the best results.
